This shape craft is a perfect pairing to the book, Spookley the Square Pumpkin, because it helps with shape recognition and allows kids to turn their different ideas into adorable works of art! It’s also part of our 31 Super Fun Halloween Activities to do in Preschool.

The book is on our list of 31 Halloween Theme Picture Books for Kids because kids love story of Spookley! It tells the tale of a pumpkin who is not like the rest and sends a sweet message that being different is unique, and being unique is AWESOME!

The fabulous thing about this craftivity is there is no right way to do it.  However it comes out, will look great!   If you are working on scissor skills with your child you can also have them do the cutting, or some of the cutting.

If you have multiple kids, these shape pumpkins will make a super cute wall display too!

Here’s what you’ll need to make the Spookley the Square Pumpkin Shape Craft:

  1. Scissors
  2. Glue
  3. Googly eyes (optional)
  4. White crayon or a liquid chalk pen
  5. Construction paper in multiple colors:
    • 1 full-sheet of black
    • 1 full-sheet of white (or white cardstock paper)
    • Orange and/or other colors of your choice cut into 1-inch squares
    • Green for the stem
    • Additional sheet of black for the face

Here’s how to make it:

  1. Have your child pick a basic shape: square, rectangle, circle, oval, triangle, heart.  Draw that shape on the white paper. Cut out the shape.
  2. Next, have them glue the 1-inch squares of construction paper onto the shape, until the entire shape is covered.  They can choose to use one color or multiple colors.  This will be the shape “pumpkin”.
  3. If needed, cut around the edges of the shape again to cut off any excess colored squares
  4. Glue the shape pumpkin onto a black piece of construction paper
  5. Using another sheet of black construction paper, cut out shapes for a face: eyes, nose, mouth, eyebrows, etc.… Add teeth to the mouth using a white crayon or chalk pen, or cut some out of white paper.  Use the googly eyes for the eyes.
  6. Have your child glue the face shapes onto the colorful shape pumpkin.
  7. Cut a stem out of green paper and glue it to the top of the shape pumpkin.
  8. Let your child choose a name for their shape pumpkin and write it with a white crayon or chalk pen on the black paper.  It’s fun to think of a name that has the same first letter sound as the shape.  This helps kids remember their shape!  Example of names: Holly the HEART Pumpkin, Rocco the RECTANGLE Pumpkin, Ted the Triangle Pumpkin
  9. Hang them up to dry and for display!

Once you have craft time cleaned up, head over to the official Spookley website to meet Spookley and all his friends!  There you will also find where to watch Spookley the Square Pumpkin the movie.
