Learning shapes is so important in preschool. It sets kids up with skills needed in other areas like math, science, and reading. They will learn the shape of a number or letter before they are able to read or write it. It also helps them identify and organize visual information.
My friend Frank is the main man in this 2-D shape matching activity! There are 3 mats, each with four shapes and a spooky-fun Halloween background. The shapes you will find included are: circle, triangle, square, rectangle, oval, rhombus, heart, star, trapezoid, pentagon, hexagon, and octagon.

Print out the shapes and shape mats, cut out the shapes, and let your preschooler match things up. I always make them say the shape out loud once they match it up too.
It is best to print the shape mats and shape cards on cardstock paper. The thick paper makes them easy for little hands to pick up and move around.
You can laminate the shape mats or use them in these Reusable Dry Erase Sleeves that I love a lot! However, I don’t recommend laminating the actual face shape cards because it makes them a difficult to pick up.
As an extension to this shape matching activity, I had my daughter pick a Frankenstein shape and find another shape in our school room or house that matches it. She was able to walk around with her buddy Frank and hold him up to different objects in our house that matched.
