Fun Ways To Celebrate The 100th Day Of Kindergarten

No matter if you homeschool your kids, or teach in a traditional school setting, the 100th day of school is a pretty cool milestone; especially in this very first year of school! It’s exciting to celebrate the progress and growth YOU and your child have made so far, because it’s truly an accomplishment. When our first 100th day of school came around it was important to me to make it fun and memorable, and thanks to these great activities, it absolutely was! Here are fun ways to celebrate the 100th day of kindergarten.

100th Day Decorations

In our homeschool, we like to party! Any chance to celebrate anything I am on it. But you can’t have a celebration without a few decorations. It seriously doesn’t need to be a lot.

My decor for the 100th day of Kindergarten were 3 balloons I blew up and on each one I wrote a number (1, 0, and 0) then hung them up so they showed 100. On our white board I wrote “Happy 100th Day of Kindergarten”!  Hardly sounds like I decorated at all, but to my daughter, Emily, it was everything!  At the end of the school day, she got to pop each balloon for completing 100 days of school.  My dog hated that part but Emily had a blast.

There are times I choose a theme and go all out with decor. Our 101 Days of Fun in First Grade had a dalmatian theme that was adorable and a lot of fun.  But I often keep it simple with a few balloons, a banner or sign, or some streamers.  Anything that makes the day stand out.

Dress up!

Along with decorating, I also like to wear a special t-shirt or costume that goes along with our celebration or theme.  They help make for fun photo shoots!  The shirts Emily and I are wearing in these photos are not available anymore but here’s a couple that are close, both from Amazon: 100 Days Brighter Pastel Adult and Youth T-Shirt and Colorful 100 Days Y’all Adult and Youth T-Shirt.

Right now I have some other shirts in my shopping cart with Etsy for our upcoming 100th day of school. I just can’t decide!  I love this neon-colored Hip Hip Hooray It’s The 100th Day, but I also love this (Taylor) Swiftie style In My 100 Days of School Era, especially as a sweatshirt. Eeeek…stay tuned for what we ended up with!

100th Day Crown Craft

A child wearing a "100 days smarter" crown points at a word chart with various words and word endings, in a classroom setting with school supplies in the background.

We started our day off making these 100th day of school crowns.  I helped my daughter color and decorate her crown, but you could also print them out on colored paper and add stickers or jewels so it is not so much to color. The crown in our pictures is The Hundreth Day Crown from TPT.  But I also like these cute printable 100th Day Crowns from Etsy that provide a couple of options with the wording (especially the HOORAY one that will go perfectly with that neon shirt).

Read The Wolf’s Chicken Stew

The Wolf’s Chicken Stew by Keiko Kazsa sounds far from a celebratory 100th day of school read, but it works perfectly!  Especially when it’s paired with the “Find 100 Chicks” activity mentioned in the next section. The story follows a hungry wolf’s attempts to fatten up a chicken for a hearty chicken stew, by making her hundreds of treats.  Instead, he winds up with one hundred new little friends.  It’s a sweet and silly story kids love.

If you have already read this story and are looking for a book more specific to the 100th Day of school, here are a few other options:

Hundreth Day Disaster by Bridget Reistad which is full of rhymes and counting.

Miss Mingo and the 100th Day of School by Jamie Harper is a funny and interesting book with facts about different animals.

The Night Before the 100th Day of School by Natasha Wing is a funny to the tune of the poem “The Night Before Christmas…” about a very memorable 100th day celebration. We love all The Night Before stories!

If I Were 100 Years Old by Mary Jantz is a super sweet book about experiences might have if they lived to be 100 years old. We loved it because it teaches about love, happiness, and appreciation for people.

Find 100 Chicks

This scavenger hunt activity will be up there at the top of fun ways to celebrate the 100th day of kindergarten! This activity is meant to be done after reading The Wolf’s Chicken Stew.

First, you’ll need to download, print, and cut out the chicks from my 100 Chicks Number Cards printable (it’s FREE – you’ll find the link for it below).

Next, HIDE THE CHICKS. All around your house, yard, classroom, park, wherever you are having your 100th day of school.

Last, have your kid(s) search and find the chicks! Since each chick has a number, start building a 100s chart with them as they are collected. This helps keep track of the numbers that have been found and what is still missing.

I designed our 100 Chicks for 100s Chart printable to have numbered chicks because when we did this activity, our chicks were NOT numbered (silly me didn’t think about writing the numbers on them), and we only found 94 of them. I say “we” because even though I hid those chicks, I didn’t remember where!  If we had been able to build a 100s chart with them, it would have been helpful.  However, I learned from my mistake and the following year I hid my printable 101 dalmatian number cards, for the 101st day of first grade, that we turned into an adorable chart of spotted pups!

Quick Tip #1: print the chicks on cardstock paper to make them sturdier for grabby little hands. Use yellow cardstock or multiple colors if you want to make colorful chicks.

Quick Tip #2: unless it is going to bug the heck out of you, don’t try to cut the chicks out perfectly. There’s ONE HUNDRED, it’s a lot. They’re going to get bent and wrinkled.  Cut them sloppy.  It’s OK.

Make a BIG 100s Chart

This was Emily’s least favorite activity of the day, but I think it was the one that brought her the biggest sense of accomplishment. Like a lot of kids, she’s not a huge fan of handwriting.  So the task of writing numbers 1 – 100 was a little overwhelming at first. If I was a nicer mom/teacher maybe I would have skipped this activity but… I’m not.  So we didn’t. 😆 However, to make it more exciting and keep it from feeling so tedious, I decided to make a HUGE chart.

I used a long piece of easel paper, made a grid of 100 squares, and wrote NUMBERS TO 100 at the top. To make it a little easier for Emily to complete the chart, I pre-filled in the 1’s and 10’s columns. Then she filled in the numbers in between.  I gave her the option to write her rows of numbers in different colors but she stuck with simple black. And let me tell you, she was SO proud of herself when her chart was done!!

“When I’m 100 Years Old…” Craft and Writing

I personally love this craft.  It is something I look forward to every school year when we celebrate our 100th (or 101st) day. I always participate in this activity because it’s fun to hear what we think and hope for at 100 years old, and then compare it to what we thought the previous year. This activity is part craft / part writing and it comes out so cute.  Get the When I Am 100 Years Old craft from TPT.

100th Day Snack Mix

This might be one of the most fun ways to celebrate the 100th day of kindergarten. We did this before making the 100s chart too so Emily had something to do while writing her numbers. The purpose of this activity is to practice counting and skip counting by 10s, through creating a snack mix with 100 pieces. All you need to do is decide on 10 different types of snacks, then sort them into 10 groups of 10 pieces, then mix them up and enjoy!

I really like this 100th Day Snack Sorting Mat from TPT because it helps keep each group organized with its own 10-frame.  Plus, it is editable so you can change it to reflect the snacks you are using.

For our snack mix we used:

Other snack ideas:

  • Cheezit crackers
  • M&Ms
  • fruit snacks
  • popcorn
  • Chex cereal
  • gummy bears
  • fruit loops
  • apple chips
  • banana chips
  • oyster crackers
  • yogurt or chocolate covered raisins
  • mini frosted shredded wheat

This could also be done with fruit, making a fruit salad instead of snack mix!

100th Day STEM

I always throw a STEM activity into our parties or theme days!  For the 100th day of school, I use something from this bundle of 100th Day STEM Activities on TPT.  It comes with 6 different activities, list of materials needed, and some journal pages for planning a design and the outcome of the design.  Emily wanted Dad to participate in this one so together they made Hairy Glasses, using only pipe cleaners.  I’m not sure who wore them better, my cute hubby or Emily??

If you are looking for some other STEM ideas, I also pull from this Year Long STEM Activity Task Cards Bundle on TPT.  Be sure to check out our 101st Day of First Grade STEM, where Emily built an awesome dog house!

Do A Photo Shoot

Ok. This right here is my favorite part of any party we have, but it was number one on my personal list of fun ways to celebrate the 100th day of kindergarten! Please don’t let yourself forget to take a few photos during your celebration!  Or you can be like me and do an entire photo shoot.

Whether this is your first or your tenth 100th day of school, make sure you capture these fun moments.  Especially if you’ve decorated and are wearing a special shirt!  I’ve mentioned in a few other posts how hilarious but exhausting it is taking pictures of (or with) my kid, but we always end up getting a few great shots that I’m super thankful for.

To jazz up our pictures I use these Beginning and End of Year Signs and Photo Booth Props from TPT. I also recently purchased this 100th Day of School Photo Booth Props download from Etsy.  I love this set because of the old woman / old man props… and it comes with a pre-made banner!   There is an option to print in black and white too so you can print the banner on colored cardstock.

Photo Tip: If you plan to take some fun pictures with props, try to do it at the start of the day, before any activities or lessons. Waiting until the end of the school day is a challenge for everyone’s patience and trying to do it in the middle of the day often brings the silliness out, which makes it hard to transition back to doing other activities.

The day was so memorable for Emily and I thanks to these fun ways to celebrate the 100th day of kindergarten. Every school year we now look forward to that 100th day. I know some of these activities are ones we will repeat even in upper elementary grades and I hope they help create lasting memories for you and your child too!
