Halloween Roll and Match Number Game for Preschool

by Bre Decena

Your preschooler will have fun learning numbers with some adorable witches in this FREE Halloween roll and match number game! It’s one of the many activities on our 31 Super Fun Halloween Activities to do in Preschool.

They will learn how to roll a die and count the dots (which is part of learning number sense and subitizing). It also provides early exposure to reading a ten frame, which they will being using a lot when they head into pre-k and kindergarten. These little witches will also help with number recognition, counting, and matching numbers!

What’s included in the Halloween Roll and Match Number Game?

Inside the FREE download you will get:

  • Witch Ten-Frame Mat (numbers 1โ€“6 shown with hats as counters)
  • Printable paper die (color + black and white option)
  • Easy-to-follow instructions

The free game works on numbers 1-6 and uses a die to roll, count, and match numbers up to 6 on a ten-frame.

How to set up the game:

Print the game mat and die.

I highly recommend printing the game mat on cardstock paper for the most durability however a plain piece of paper works too. You could slip it into a sheet protector or one of our favorite dry erase mats, to make it durable and dry erase-able.

Print the die on regular paper (or a piece of colored paper, I love Astrobrights paper!).  This makes it easier to fold and assemble.

If youโ€™ve never assembled a paper die before hereโ€™s how to do it:

  1. Cut out the die and fold along all lines and flaps.
  2. Then fold and glue or tape the flaps to their opposite sides.  The flaps should all be inside the die and the dots should show on all six sides on the outside.
  3. NOTE: I like to use double sided tape or glue dots to attach the flaps together.

OR you can watch the assembly in this helpful YouTube video

How to play:

Use a place marker of your kiddoโ€™s choice to put on the ten frame theyโ€™ve matched.  We used a large triangle button to be like a witch’s hat.  We have this large set of buttons I bought on Amazon that we use for a lot of match activities and crafts. But a plastic spider, candy pumpkin, or a monster game piece from the 31 Super Fun Halloween Activities – Monster Cookie Board Game would work great too. You could even make the mat dry erase and use a dry erase pen!

Lay the mat out on a table or the floor then have your kiddo get to rollin’! They will roll the die, count the dots, then put their place marker on the matching ten-frame witch. Then roll again.

Fun tip: you can double this game as a movement activity by getting a set of large foam dice– they are fun to toss (especially down the stairs) and will require your kiddo to get up and run over to see what they rolled. Since they are big, they are easy to keep track of. Since they are foam, they don’t hurt as bad when they get thrown at you (oops!). And they can be used for MANY school and non-school activities!
